Now that's a burger

I love hamburgers. I have since I was a young boy. But I don't know about this.

The West Michigan Whitecaps, a minor league baseball team, will be offering up major league cholesterol, carbohydrates and calories in a hamburger being added to the menu this year at the Fifth Third Ballpark.

The 4-pound, $20 burger features five beef patties, five slices of cheese, nearly a cup of chili and liberal doses of salsa and corn chips, all on an 8-inch sesame-seed bun.

The Grand Rapids Press reports that anyone who eats the entire 4,800-calorie behemoth in one sitting will receive a special T-shirt.

And likely a trip to the emergency room.

The Midwest League team is a Class A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers.

As I put my watch up to my ear, I expect to hear click, click, click, as each second moves forward. Kind of like my current days as a sportswriter ... click, click, click. Mr. Thompson goes to Washington

No, this is not a remake of Jimmy Stewart's 1939 classic movie, "Mr. Smith goes to Washington." Mr. Thompson is Mountain West Conference commissioner Craig Thompson, who spent Thursday and Friday pleading his case that the current BCS football playoff system ... well, kind of sucks. The only problem is Congress is not in session. Evidently, they are on the President Obama World Tour drumming up support for the porkulus bill ... uh, I mean stimulus bill that was signed earlier in the week. Thompson is spreading the word to people who will spread the word to Congress when their travel expenses run out and they have to return to Washington. You have to give Thompson an A for effort. At least he is trying to get something done. Unfortunately, he's probably barking up the wrong tree. Final Four

When you're trying to at least stay competitive, one out of two is bad. That's what happened on my bracket on Saturday. Going from worst to first wasn't going to quite happen in my pool, but if I would have gotten my way, I would have made a pretty impressive showing in the end. Thanks Kansas. Or should I say, thanks for nothing North Carolina. I picked the Tar Heels to beat the Jayhawks and then win it all with a victory over Memphis. Of course, that was bracket-speak . In the real world, I did predict that North Carolina and Memphis would probably win close games. I was 0-for-2 there. Memphis did win, but dominated UCLA for the most part and Kansas routed North Carolina. So much for thinking that with four No. 1 seeds playing for the first time in history, they would be good games. It just goes to show you that anything can happen and usually does.
