Mr. Thompson goes to Washington

No, this is not a remake of Jimmy Stewart's 1939 classic movie, "Mr. Smith goes to Washington."

Mr. Thompson is Mountain West Conference commissioner Craig Thompson, who spent Thursday and Friday pleading his case that the current BCS football playoff system ... well, kind of sucks.

The only problem is Congress is not in session. Evidently, they are on the President Obama World Tour drumming up support for the porkulus bill ... uh, I mean stimulus bill that was signed earlier in the week.

Thompson is spreading the word to people who will spread the word to Congress when their travel expenses run out and they have to return to Washington.

You have to give Thompson an A for effort. At least he is trying to get something done. Unfortunately, he's probably barking up the wrong tree. Putting the BCS in the hands of Congress is like having your alcoholic friend watch a six-pack of Bud Lite for you that you are anxiously looking forward to at the end of the day.

I'd say Congress has other things to worry about, including:

1) Themselves
2) More bail outs
3) Alex Rodriguez
4) Paying their taxes
5) Yet, more bail outs

It sounds like somebody has been listening to Rush Limbaugh. He makes great points about the pork. I think that the best arguement any one could make about the bcs, is the fact that Fresno ST.(baseball) and Memphis(hoops) both wouldnt have had title shots in their respective sports if they had the same system. North Carolina and Duke would play every other year in basketball. I agree with Settle tho, if Utah can go undefeated again this year than it will be hard for the Bcs dorks to keep them out of the title.
Great points Jim. I didn't even think about the Fresno State comparison. No way in the BCS system that they would even be close to making it.

My biggest concern is that if Utah, or whoever wins the MWC next season isn't unbeaten or a Top 10 team next year, the conference will be pushed aside again with a "I told you so, they don't belong," attitude.
