A look at Saturday's practice

As we all know, Devin Moore and Wynel Seldon, mainstays in the Wyoming backfield for the last four years, are gone.

So who is running the football these days for the Cowboys?

Nick Landess and Jake Scott? What in the Wide World of Sports is going on here?

The two Wyoming kicks ran the ball a little Saturday in practice at the Indoor Practice Facility.
OK, I’ve pulled your chain long enough.

The two kickers, like many other special teamers, were just getting a taste in some drills of what it is like getting thumped a little bit in an effort for them to learn how to hang onto the football. It’s all part of the “It’s All About The Ball” campaign that new head coach Dave Christensen and staff have implemented.

“Everybody has to learn how to protect the football. If it ends up in their hands, there is one way we want them to hold the football,” Christensen said.

Don’t fret, the only time Landess or Scott will run the ball is if there is a problem with the kick and they are running for their live. Knock on wood, that won’t happen.

Protecting the football is critical for the Wyoming program. After the last couple of years, it better be.

“We emphasis protecting the football, we emphasis getting it out on defense,” Christensen said.

Speaking of the UW kickers, if Saturday is any indication, Landess has a big leg up on Scott and the rest of the UW booters.

Landess was not only punting the ball high and deep, he was booming several field goal attempts on Saturday. Scott, meanwhile, struggled.

Christensen said they really haven’t made any real evaluations on their kickers as of yet and will likely do so after next Saturday’s scrimmage.

“Next Saturday, they will get a lot of situations and they will be evaluated in those situations, just like everybody else,” he said.

Speaking of running backs, Christensen again said they have no depth chart as of yet, but the three main backs -- Darius Terry, James Davis and James Caraway -- are practicing well.

“All three guys we got out there are doing a good job,” Christensen said. “The important thing for those guys is to understand the emphasis of protecting the football. If you are going to play running back in those offense, or any position on this offense, you have to protect the ball. They are working hard and we’ll have a better feel after evaluating today’s practice.”

After three practices, Christensen was asked what he thought stood out. He said it is too early to tell specifically, but he likes the team’s work ethic as they learn how they want them to practice.

“We want our kids to go full speed from the start of practice, to end of practice,” he said. “We don’t want to stand around, we’ll work the entire time that we are on the field. It’s a difficult thing to run around for two hours, 25 minutes non stop.”
