You better be good while at the MWC tourney
I don't have to worry about it because I'm not going to the MWC basketball tournament again this year, but if you are, behave yourself.
Evidently, the MWC is cracking down on all of you hooligans. It's kind of funny, though, for all of the years that I attended the tournament, other than Lee Cummard's wife, I don't remember too many serious incidents.
But here's a release from the league office that explains it all:
"In a coordinated effort to ensure a secure environment for all participants and an improved overall fan experience, security at Thomas & Mack Center will be significantly heightened for the 2009 Conoco Mountain West Conference Basketball Championships, scheduled for March 10-14 in Las Vegas, Nev.
Text-messaging, limitations on alcohol sales and revised plans for post-game celebrations are among the enhanced security measures that will be in place throughout the championships.
Additional procedures will be administered behind the scenes to address safety considerations.
The Mountain West Conference has selected GuestAssist to improve fans' game-day experience at Thomas & Mack Center. GuestAssist provides instant two-way, text messaging-based communication between ticket holders and event staff, allowing for improved management of safety, security and guest services. GuestAssist is currently in use by the National Football League and other professional sport organizations with great success.
GuestAssist will provide a simple text message code that will permit fans to send questions, concerns or requests via their mobile phones to Thomas & Mack Center's Command and Control Center. The number will be communicated to fans via in-stadium signage, public address announcements and other means. The operator can send reply messages directly to the fan's phone to answer questions or obtain more information, and, if necessary, can quickly dispatch safety/security, medical or guest services staff to the appropriate location.
In addition, alcohol sales and consumption will be limited as follows:
•Alcohol transactions will be limited to a maximum of two beers/drinks per person.•Alcohol will not be served to individuals who are obviously inebriated.
•Alcohol will not be vended in the arena seating areas.
•Alcohol sales will be terminated at the 16:00 minute mark in the second half of the second game of each session of the tournament. For three-game sessions, sales will cease at the 16:00 mark of third game.
Mountain West officials have also reviewed procedures for the post-game celebration following the conclusion of the men's championship game. Rather than attempting to restrain fans completely from entering the court area, fans will be allowed to celebrate on the floor in a controlled manner, following a brief delay to allow for the non-winning team and its spirit squads to be removed safely from the court.
"The Mountain West Conference is committed to creating a safe, comfortable and enjoyable experience for the student-athletes, coaches and fans," said MWC Commissioner Craig Thompson. "We believe these plans, in conjunction with the other security measures that will be implemented, will allow everyone to fully enjoy the spirit of competition that is synonymous with Mountain West athletics."
Does this mean that you can text message security to complain about all of the annoying BYU fans? If so, then I like it.
