Wyoming at The Pit
It's called The Pit, although it's official name is University Arena. The New Mexico sports information department calls it The Pit/Bob King Court.
While I won't make it this year, it has always been one of my favorite trips in covering University of Wyoming athletics. Maybe a close second to Las Vegas, for obvious reasons.
Some of my favorite Wyoming basketball (road) memories come in The Pit.
I'll never forget the 2002 NCAA Tournament in which the Cowboys upset Gonzaga, before losing to Arizona in a close contest. It was a great experience as a sports writer and certainly was memorable for Wyoming fans.
Last year, we made the drive to Albuquerque for the first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance for the Wyoming Cowgirls. This time I was able to take my family, and being married to a former Cowgirl, it was an experience we will never forget, even with Wyoming losing to Pittsburgh.
For the Cowboys, who will look to rebound from Saturday's lop-sided loss to BYU in Provo, it's been an up and down venue to play in. Wyoming actually has won three times in the last nine games there, but has dropped five straight, including a bad 100-55 loss last season. Overall, New Mexico holds a 29-14 edge at The Pit, which is actually the second best opposing record in the building, second only to BYU's 17 wins there.
Of course, we all remember the embarrassing fiasco two years ago when several Cowboys and Lobos were suspended for fighting. Not a favorite memory, but a memorable one nevertheless.
An interesting side note, Wyoming senior Brandon Ewing will go down as one of the greatest players in Mountain West Conference history -- he is now third all-time in scoring. The Pit, however, has not been kind to him. Going into Tuesday's games, Ewing has scored just 13 points in three games there. We'll see what happens in his fourth game in The Pit.
