Down to the wire in the MWC

For a while, it was looking as if four or five losses could win the Mountain West Conference men's basketball race this year.

It was just a couple of weeks ago that there was a logjam in first place with two losses. Since then, only Utah and San Diego State has maintained the winning pace, and the two teams remain tied for first at 7-2.

That will all change on Wednesday, as the Aztecs travel to Utah with first place on the line.

The winner of that game won't clinch the regular-season title, but it could get a little advantage down the stretch, especially if things fall in place. It also might just be a temporary lead, if things fall into place.

If the Aztecs get a big road win, they'll return home to host a struggling Wyoming team Saturday night. Their remaining schedule won't be easy, but it might be a little better than Utah's final four games The Aztecs will have a tough game at New Mexico, before hosting BYU, traveling to to TCU and closing with Colorado State at home.

For the Utes, they'll stay at home Saturday against Air Force, host UNLV, then hit the road with two very difficult games at BYU and New Mexico, before closing at home against TCU.

While New Mexico and BYU are tied for third with three losses, my guess is that BYU is the more talented team and has a better shot at challenging for the title. The Cougars have three of their final five at home, but will likely need a road break through at UNLV or San Diego State.

Looking ahead, anything can happen. Four losses could mean a shared regular-season title ... between three teams.

Stay tuned.
