All smiles on Sunday

Joe Legerski warned us all early on, saying his young Cowgirls' team would have its ups and downs; win some big games and lose some tough encounters.

The Cowgirls were picked sixth in the preseason MWC standings and that's where they stand with less than a month to play.

At 4-6 in league play and 12-11 overall, Legerski hit the nail on the head. There have certainly been some disappointing losses for a program that had been used to more big wins than tough defeats.

In the last two home games, the Cowgirls have shown some spark that the faithful UW fans are used to seeing. After hitting a tough stretch in January, the Cowgirls are showing some signs of coming around, edging a good New Mexico team 52-50 and beating a very talented San Diego State squad on Sunday, 64-61. Even last Sunday's seven-point loss to MWC-leading Utah in Salt Lake City showed that Wyoming is bcoming more competitive with the elite in the league.

The Cowgirls certainly go as they shoot the basketball, and that still needs to be shored up before they can challenge for the top again. Wyoming also goes on the road next week at UNLV and TCU.

Legerski will be looking for continued improvement, regardless of winning or losing. He also knows that just because the Cowgirls are getting better, they're not out of the woods yet. The type of games they have had when they struggled can come back at anytime for a young squad, especially against some of the best teams in the league.

But as Legerski opened his post-game news conference, there are a lot of smiles coming from the Cowgirls, their coaches and their fans. The smiles are there because, despite some growing pains this season, the future for Cowgirl basketball is looking brighter and brighter as they go.
