MWC slaps Glenn's, Sween's wrists

This sounds like something out of a television drama, like Law and Order. The victim is blamed for the crime and the perpetrator is set scott free.

The Mountain West Conference has reprimanded Wyoming head football coach Joe Glenn and Cowboy junior quarterback Karsten Sween for their comments after Sween was the victim of a vicious hit by TCU linebacker Robert Henson on Oct. 25 in Fort Worth.

Sween had a concussion from the hit by Henson, who was flagged for a personal foul penalty. After the game, Glenn said he thought the hit was a "cheap shot," and Sween said it was a "dirty hit."

Sween did not play last weekend because of the injury, but was cleared to play for Saturday's game at Tennessee. Freshman quarterback Chris Stutzriem, however, will start at quarterback against the Volunteers.

The conference issued a statement saying the comments violated the conference's sportsmanship rules.

"The remarks appeared in the Laramie Boomerang and Casper Star-Tribune on Oct. 28 and 29, respectively. The actions of Coach Glenn and Mr. Sween were in violation of MWC Sportsmanship Rule Sections 4.2-e and 4.4.5.

"The Mountain West Conference will have no further comment regarding this case. The provisions of the MWC Sportsmanship Policy can be found in Rule 4 of the MWC Handbook - which can be accessed via the www.TheMWC.com Web site."

How ridiculous is this? I understand the league has an obligation to make sure every player or coach upholds the sportsmanship rules, but let's face it, who should have been punished? No action was taken on Henson's hit, which was ruled a penalty. How about against TCU coach Gary Patterson? Well, Patterson didn't do anything wrong. I'd say, just because.

My original thought was the hit wasn't a "dirty hit." I've since seen the replay a few more times and I've changed my mind. Swenson was sliding and Henson, whether it was intentional or not, went after a defenseless player. Maybe a suspension for a quarter or a half for Henson should have been appropriate. Isn't that what punishment is all about -- to deter others from committing the same infractions.

My guess is the reprimand is basically nothing but a slap on the wrist. If it happens again, then you are in big trouble mister. MWC commissioner Craig Thompson is Dean Wormer and Glenn and Sween are members of Delta House (from the movie Animal House). Maybe they are now on double, secret probation.

I don't know. This just smells like cabbage. It's not like Glenn gave another coach the one finger salute. Wait a minute, that was last year.
