Story of the day 1 and 2
Gathering around the water cooler early on Wednesday, talk was on Game 6 of the NBA Finals. After the Celtics blowout, the discussion probably ended with a "thank goodness" that there will be no Game 7.
For the most part, the much anticipated Lakers-Celtics reunion was somewhat of a dull event. Give credit to the Celtics, they were the better team. The games as a whole, however, were not what most people had hoped for, especially those, including me, that were wanting the series to be somewhat of a nostalgic rehash of the old days. Did this series bring in old NBA fans who had grown tired of the current show? The ratings might have been up, but I doubt it. I can speak for myself in saying that I am not much more of a NBA fan than I was a month ago and I was just luke warm then.
We'll see, but I'm glad the season is over.
By early afternoon, the water cooler talk turned to Tiger Woods, when it was learned that he is out for the season because of pending knee surgery. Let's call this the story of the day 1A. As is turned out, Woods' knee injury (torn ACL and two fractures of his tibia) was much worse than he had let on (purposely so), which makes his thrilling win over Rocco Mediate in the U.S. Open that much more spectacular. How many athletes (and yes, golfers are athletes) could have accomplished what he did with an injury like that? With the way Woods swings the clubs (134-MPH swing) and the tork he generates, a healthy knee is a must. The wear and tear his swing generates on his knees has to be massive.
It will be interesting to see how the rest of this year's golf season, especially the final two Majors go without Tiger. It will also be interesting to see how Tiger comes back for 2009.
Needless to say, there was plenty to talk about around the water cooler on Wednesday.
