UW wrestling recruiting ranked 11th in country

Interim UW wrestling coach Ben VomBaur has stepped into a nice situation, as the Cowboy wrestling program's recruiting class is ranked 11th in the country by W.I.N. Magazine.

“A nationally ranked recruiting class is a step in the right direction and a taste of things to come for this program,” VomBaur said. “Our staff worked very hard to sign guys that are a good fit for the Wyoming wrestling team and it looks to be the best recruiting class in several years.”

Before longtime head coach Steven Suder resigned after a decorated 19 year career, he assembled one of the best recruiting classes in Wyoming history. Eric Jones (149-157) of Auburn, Wash., is ranked seventh in the nation. L.J. Helbig (184-197) of Mason Mich., along with Idaho 215-pounders Jacob Scharbrough of Weiser High are both ranked eighth and Alfonso Hernandez of Blackfoot High School, is ranked 11th. They have combined for five state crowns and will add some much needed depth to the Cowboys middle and heavyweight classes.

Also recruited this year for Wyoming include Jimmy Eggemeyer (125/133) of Kodiak, Alaska, top in-state recruits, Jared Hatley (141-149) of Torrington, Kasey Garnhart (133-141) of Basin's Riverside High and Laramie native Michael Poulos (184). They have combined to win eight state championships.

“As a whole, these young men have a combination of athleticism, academics, and character,” VomBaur said. “People can expect big things on and off the mat from the University of Wyoming wrestling program in the very near future. Coach Suder has left this program in excellent shape and has given us a great opportunity to succeed. We are grateful for everything he has done to help us take this program to the next step.”

This year’s recruiting class ranks above every Pac 10 school and several Big Ten and Big 12 schools, including national powerhouses Nebraska, Ohio State and Missouri. All eight student-athletes will enroll at Wyoming for the 2008 fall semester.
