State soccer tournament

Bundle up state soccer fans. You'll at least need some winter outerwear for Thursday's opening round games. The forecast for Thursday is rain and snow and highs around 46 degrees. The rest of the tournament looks better weather-wise, especially Saturday when it could be back in the upper 60s and sunny.

Despite the weather, the Class 4A and 3A tournaments have the makings of some outstanding soccer. For Laramie fans, it could be a special tournament. Both Plainsmen and Lady Plainsmen teams go into the tournament No. 1 -- a first-ever for the Laramie programs.

The Lady Plainsmen are nothing but on a roll, winners of 13 straight games after a season-opening loss to Gering, Neb., in which the Laramie roster wasn't at full force. The Plainsmen have just one loss on the season as well and a couple of ties and have been playing very well as of late.

Being No. 1 going into the tournament doesn't guarantee a thing. Both Laramie teams have to play their game to come out successful. By Saturday afternoon, we'll know if that happens.

The tournament has also grown and will feature a separate 3A division. That means there will be 44 games on five Laramie fields. If you're a fan of high school soccer, Laramie is the place to be this weekend.

Here's the first-round matchups:

4A boys -- Kelly Walsh vs. Gillette, 2 p.m. (LSA Field); Cheyenne East vs. Casper Natrona, 2 p.m. (UW Fieldhouse Field); Rock Springs vs. Cheyenne Central, 4:30 p.m. (LSA Field); Green River vs. Laramie, 4:30 p.m. (UW Fieldhouse Field).
