Petsch in fifth to begin decathlon

Wyoming's Jay Petsch opened the decathlon in fifth place on Wednesday to begin the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Fort Worth, Texas.

Petsch has 3,408 points, with BYU's Chase Dalton leading after five events with 3.690 points. Petsch placed third in the 100-meter dash in 11.16 seconds, then slipped to sixth in the long jump with a leap of 20-feet, 9 1/4 inches. He was seventh in the shot put at 34-7 1/5, seventh in the high jump at 5-7 1/4 and first in the 400 in 49.18.

"Jay is doing a great job and hanging tough with some of the best in the conference," Wyoming assistant coach Quincy Howe said . "He ended the day on a great note by winning and setting a new personal best in the 400-meter dash and in the 100-meter dash. He is a tough competitor and will leave it all out on the track tomorrow."

The decathlon and heptathlon will finish up Thursday with the final five events, beginning at noon. (MT)
