Burke wins Yates Service Award


Congratulations to former UW deputy athletics director and senior woman administrator Barbara Burke for being named the recipient for the 2008 Dr. Albert C. Yates Distinguished Service Award.

The Dr. Albert C. Yates Award, named in honor of the former Colorado State University president, is bestowed upon an individual who has successfully supported, promoted and exemplified the ideals of the Mountain West Conference or a member institution.
Burke is just the seventh recipient of the award, joining Linda Estes, former New Mexico senior woman administrator; Elaine Michaelis, former BYU head volleyball coach and women's athletics director; LaVell Edwards, former BYU head football coach; Rudy Davalos, former New Mexico athletics director; Dr. Larry Gerlach, former Utah faculty athletics representative and Marsha Smeltzer, former Colorado State senior woman administrator.

An active member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of America (NACDA) and National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA), Burke served the University of Wyoming as an athletics administrator for 10 years, including the past two as the deputy director of athletics and senior woman administrator. In that role, she helped to oversee strategic planning for the department, as well as the day-to-day operations of Wyoming's athletic program.

Burke, who recently accepted the position of Director of Athletics at Eastern Illinois University, served as Wyoming's representative on the transition team when the Mountain West Conference was formed in 1998 and was one of the original members of the MWC Joint Council.
Throughout her tenure at Wyoming, she demonstrated her commitment to academic excellence and integrity in collegiate athletics by actively participating in a variety of MWC and NCAA committees, including the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball committee (2005-07) and the Mountain West Conference Championship committee (2004).

Burke did a great job in her tenure at Wyoming and will be missed.

As I put my watch up to my ear, I expect to hear click, click, click, as each second moves forward. Kind of like my current days as a sportswriter ... click, click, click. Chargers sign Vinnedge, Betschart

No Wyoming football players were drafted over the weekend in the NFL Draft, but a pair of former Cowboys will try to stick with the San Diego Chargers. Punter Billy Vinnedge and tight end/H-back Wade Betschart both signed free agent contracts Sunday with the Chargers. As of Sunday night, they were the lone former Cowboys to sign with a NFL team. Cornerbacks Michael Medina and Julius Stinson are waiting for that opportunity. Vinnedge and Betschart join former Cowboys, wide receiver Malcom Floyd and quarterback Casey Bramlet, on the San Diego roster. Bramlet was picked up last week, likely as a "camp arm." Other former Cowboys currently on NFL rosters include kicker Aaron Elling (Cincinnati), cornerback Derrick Martin (Baltimore), offensive lineman Adam Goldberg (St. Louis), linebacker Patrick Chukwurah (Tampa Bay) and safety John Wendling and defensive lineman Corey Mace (both of Buffalo).

Do fired NFL coaches still get paid?

The first Monday after the end of the regular season in the NFL is accurately labeled Black Monday. Less than a week after Christmas, it's when the axes fall on several head coaches. Bah humbug!!! As of this writing, three NFL coaches -- Eric Mangini of the New York Jets, Romeo Crennel of the Cleveland Browns and Rod Marinelli of the Detroit Lions -- will be filing their unemployment papers any day now. Actually, that makes me wonder. Do fired professional coaches file for unemployment compensation? Are they actually listed on the national unemployment statistics? I wonder what the fired coaches bi-weekly unemployment checks will be? I'll bet it is more than $330 a week. I blame it on the economy. Forget the fact that the Lions went 0-16 this season. Remember, Detroit is home of the automaker. Forget the fact that Brett's Jets were once 8-3, but lost four of its last five games.
