Cowboy coaches bring the heat
Those who have watched the Cowboys practice this season were initially stunned at the rise of intensity by Dave Christensen and his staff.
Now, just one week away from the end of spring drills, amazement might be the definition now. During Saturday's scrimmage, it was still obvious that there will be no letting up.
Christensen said that they feel that it is their job to keep on the players, regardless of the situation.
"I'd like them to be more intense every day," Christensen said. "They were getting after it today, and we talked about at some staff meetings that we need to be a little more demanding of these players, to get them to do what we want them to do. I thought they came out and coached hard today and I thought the kids played hard today. There were a lot of positives today."
It was another big day for the offense, as it rolled in the special scoring system, 59-24. In the three scrimmages, the offense has outscored the defense, 148-74.
The offense struggled in the first couple of series, but put the pressure on the depleted defense for much of the day, especially in the second half. The overall scoring on the day was 59-24 in favor of the offense.
Some highlights include a nice 22-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Karsten Sween to sophomore receiver Brandon Stewart, who is rounding into form as the Cowboys top receiver and all-purpose player. Stewart had five catches for 71 yards and also scored on a 4-yard touchdown run.
The UW quarterbacks, particularly Sween and Dax Crum, looked solid. The QBs were 35-of-48 passing for 343 yards, one TD and one interception.
Senior running back Darius Terry had a decent day, running for 49 yards on 15 carries, including two TDs. The UW backs ran for 128 yards on 41 carries.
Defensively, free safety Chris Prosinski had a huge game hitting, with several big thuds. He also had 11 tackles. Tashaun Gipson had a nice pass interception in the back of the end zone. As has been the case, though, the defense, short on numbers wore down at times. A few former 'Pokes, including linebacker Ward Dobbs, suited up again to help out.
One bright spot injury-wise for the defense saw noseguard Fred Givens back in action for a few snaps. Givens has been hampered by a couple of shoulder injuries this spring.
The Cowboys will close the spring with practices on Tuesday and Thursday, before the spring Game on Saturday. Look for more of the same and no letdown in the intensity department.
