MWC presents BCS proposal

You've got to give Mountain West Conference commissioner Craig Thompson credit on trying to get the league in the BCS. He's not backing down.

Thompson and the Mountain West Conference has presented the BCS with a proposal to create an eight-team playoff in major college football that would allow greater access to teams outside the six most powerful leagues.

Thompson and four MWC university leaders, including Wyoming President Tom Buchanan, announced details of the proposal Wednesday on a conference call.

The call for change comes after a season in which MWC champion Utah was the only unbeaten major team but was never seriously in the running to play in the BCS national championship game.

The conferences with automatic access to five BCS games are the Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC, ACC and Pac-10.

Florida beat Oklahoma in the BCS title game; the Utes finished No. 2 after beating Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.

Chargers sign Vinnedge, Betschart

No Wyoming football players were drafted over the weekend in the NFL Draft, but a pair of former Cowboys will try to stick with the San Diego Chargers. Punter Billy Vinnedge and tight end/H-back Wade Betschart both signed free agent contracts Sunday with the Chargers. As of Sunday night, they were the lone former Cowboys to sign with a NFL team. Cornerbacks Michael Medina and Julius Stinson are waiting for that opportunity. Vinnedge and Betschart join former Cowboys, wide receiver Malcom Floyd and quarterback Casey Bramlet, on the San Diego roster. Bramlet was picked up last week, likely as a "camp arm." Other former Cowboys currently on NFL rosters include kicker Aaron Elling (Cincinnati), cornerback Derrick Martin (Baltimore), offensive lineman Adam Goldberg (St. Louis), linebacker Patrick Chukwurah (Tampa Bay) and safety John Wendling and defensive lineman Corey Mace (both of Buffalo).

Do fired NFL coaches still get paid?

The first Monday after the end of the regular season in the NFL is accurately labeled Black Monday. Less than a week after Christmas, it's when the axes fall on several head coaches. Bah humbug!!! As of this writing, three NFL coaches -- Eric Mangini of the New York Jets, Romeo Crennel of the Cleveland Browns and Rod Marinelli of the Detroit Lions -- will be filing their unemployment papers any day now. Actually, that makes me wonder. Do fired professional coaches file for unemployment compensation? Are they actually listed on the national unemployment statistics? I wonder what the fired coaches bi-weekly unemployment checks will be? I'll bet it is more than $330 a week. I blame it on the economy. Forget the fact that the Lions went 0-16 this season. Remember, Detroit is home of the automaker. Forget the fact that Brett's Jets were once 8-3, but lost four of its last five games.
