UW football recruiting shaping up

New Wyoming head football coach Dave Christensen got a late start recruiting, but he and his staff’s efforts are not going unnoticed. With the signing date just a little over two weeks away, the Cowboys are beginning to see some real progress with verbal commitments.

The latest verbal might also be the best as far as recruiting ratings are concerned, as Bellarmine Prep (San Jose, Calif.) standout quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels has apparently given Christensen the word that he is coming to Wyoming.

Carta-Samuels is a three-star recruit, according to Scout.com, and he is rated the 22nd best dual threat high school quarterback in the country by Rivals.com and 37th by Scout.com.

He verbally committed to San Jose State during the summer and also received scholarship offers from Utah, Air Force, San Diego State, Purdue, and UNLV.

At 6-foot-1, 210 pounds, Carta-Samuels led Bellarmine Prep to the WCAL Championship and the CIF-CCS Open Division Title. The Bells finished the year ranked No. 2 in Northern California.

As a junior at Bellarmine Prep, he ran for 262 yards and eight touchdowns on 81 carries and was 83 for 138 passing for 1,171 yards and eight touchdowns in a primarily run-oriented offense.

One of the coaches that recruited him at San Jose State was co-offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo, the new UW offensive coordinator.

Carta-Samuels is the second quarterback in UW's 2009 recruiting class. Robert Benjamin (6-2, 205) from Phoenix Community College in Arizona signed last month and is currently enrolled in school.

Through Sunday, UW now has 16 verbal commitments and one signee in this year's recruiting class. The Cowboys are expected to sign 22 or 23 players in this recruiting class.

It proved to be a good weekend for recruiting, according to the Wyoming Tribune-Eagle, as five other prep stars gave verbals. The other commitments from last weekend include Kenny Browder, CB (5-10, 170), Round Rock; Texas (Stony Point HS), Rodney Jaynes, WR (6-4, 205), Chicago (Hales Fransican HS); Larry Mitchell, S, (6-2, 180), Fort Worth, Texas (North Crowley HS); Ghaali Muhammed, ATH, (6-0, 210), St. Joseph's Mo. (Central HS) and Mark Willis, DL, (6-4, 230), Oak Park, Ill. (River Forest HS).

Previous verbals given include Kevin Gaddis, CB (5-9, 175), Midwest City Okla. (Midwest City HS); Shamiel Gary, S ( 6-1, 205), Tulsa, Okla. (Booker T. Washington HS); Devyn Harris, LB (6-3), 195, Fountain, Colo. (Fountain-Fort Carson HS); Todd Knight, LB (6-2, 200), Aurora, Colo. (Grandview HS); Trendt Marsom, S (6-0, 195), Mililani, Hawaii (Kaimuki HS); Michael Purcell, DL (6-3, 260), Highlands Ranch, Colo. (Highlands Ranch HS); Jeff Roueche, LB (6-3, 205), Niwot, Colo. (Niwot HS); Luke Ruff, S (5-11, 190), Castle Rock, Colo. (Douglas County HS); T.J. Smith, TE (6-3, 220, Tulsa, Okla. (Booker T. Washington HS) and David Tooley, TE (6-5, 200), Moberly, Mo. (Moberly HS).

Christensen and staff have hit the ground running. While it remains to be seen if his first recruiting class pans out in the future, there’s no doubt that they have turned some heads in a short time on the job.
