Basketball is around the corner
With the crispness in the air that has us all shivering a bit (especially when your furnace doesn't kick on), it must be about time for basketball season.
The season officially begins Friday with the first practices for the Cowboys and Cowgirls. Of course, official is the key word as both squads have been allowed various workouts together since the beginning of classes.
Both Wyoming teams were picked sixth in Tuesday's MWC media/coaches poll that was released during the MWC Preseason Media Days in Las Vegas. For the most part, that was about where both head coaches -- Heath Schroyer for the Cowboys and Joe Legerski for the Cowgirls -- figured.
For the Wyoming men, this season is a chance for Schroyer to have a little better handle on his team (not that he didn't have a handle last year), but in the sense that he has more of his recruits on the floor. I think you're going to see a much improved squad that is far superior athletically and should have a better chance of getting up and down the floor and scoring.
Senior guard Brandon Ewing returns to put a cap on his already outstanding career for the Cowboys, along with Ryan Dermody, Mikhail Linskens and Tyson Johnson. Look for senior transfer Sean Ogirri to lead a talented group of newcomers this season.
For the Cowgirls, there is no doubt that you can call it a rebuilding year. After all, you don't lose seniors like Hanna Zavecz, Justina Podziemska, Dominique Sisk and Jodi Bolerjack, and pick up right where you left off. If you remember, last year's group of seniors that took the program to new heights struggled a bit themselves in their freshmen year. And don't forget, veterans Megan McGuffey, Aubrey Vandiver, Elisabeth Dissen and Rebecca Vanderjagt are back to anchor the team.
My guess, though, is the Cowgirls will be much better than some expect as the incoming freshmen class is very talented, possibly as talented as Legerski has had in his tenure.
Regardless, it's a long basketball season, so strap up and let's get going.
