Wednesday's disjointed ramblings

It's hump day, but here's to a fun weekend.

How excited are you about Saturday's little alumni basketball event at the Arena-Auditorium? Personally, I can't wait. I hate to say it, but I'm a little more pumped for that than the Wyoming-Bowling Green football game.

I wish it weren't true; not being excited about the football game. It's just the way things seem to be with the football program these days. Like a lot of fans, I want to see the Cowboys succeed. Like a lot of fans, I'm puzzled as to why it isn't happening. At 2-2, the Cowboys can still have an outstanding season. The problem is, we just haven't seen anything that would lead us to believe it is going to happen.

Not yet, anyway. Let's hope the Cowboys pick it up against Bowling Green. If they do, we'll all feel a little better about things.

Back to basketball. It's less than a month away from basketball practices officially beginning for both the Cowboys and Cowgirls. That should be fun. In the meantime, its back in time with 21 former Cowboys coming back, including seven several Hall of Fame players and one Hall of Fame coach.

They include Charles Bradley, Fennis Dembo, Bill Garnett, Eric Leckner, Theo Ratliff, Kenny Sailors and Reggie Slater, along with Hall of Fame coach Jim Brandenburg.

Action begins at 6:30 p.m. with a 3-point shooting contest and 7 p.m. with the "game." Although it is free to the public, all proceeds of the event will go to the Oliver Wilson Cancer fund. Wilson was a big part of the Cowboy basketball team during the late 1980s and will be a member of the Brown team. Any donations for Oliver and his family can be made through UniWyo Federal Credit Union. There is also a website where donations can be made at http://www.owcancerfund.org/.

If you're into a little nostalgia, you might want to head to Deti Stadium Friday night to see the Plainsmen take on Scottsbluff, Neb. Even if you're not into nostalgia, go watch the game anyway. High school football is a great way to kick off the weekend and both teams would appreciate your support.

There will be a little Plainsmen flavor on the Scottsbluff sidelines -- co-head coaches Joe Benson and Derek Deaver, along with assistant coach Mark Moran, are all LHS graduates and former Plainsmen players.

Also, tune into Sportsline Live (shameless plug). Wednesday night, David Settle and yours truly will talk to Slater about the Alumni Game. On Thursday and Friday, co-hosts Brett Brown and Baend Buus will visit with Fennis Dembo, Ryan Yarborough and Marcus Harris.

Now those are Hall of Fame shows for sure.
