UW sports medicine recognized as tops in MWC

The University of Wyoming athletics training room was recently named Co-Sports Medicine Staff of the Year at the 2008 Mountain West Conference physicians and athletics trainers meeting in Las Vegas. BYU also earned the honor, which is named after long time BYU athletics trainer George F. Curtis ATC, who recently retired. This is the first year of the award and it is voted on by the members of the committee.

“This is an honor to receive this award. It is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of the sports medicine staff at the University of Wyoming,” Wyoming head athletic trainer Robb Williams said in a release. “You win with great people. We have those people here that are supported by a great athletics department and university who strive for superior health care for our student-athletes. Our whole organization of health care providers will all share in this honor.”

This is an annual meeting made up of physicians and certified athletics trainers from the MWC, which has gathered since the beginning of the conference. Sports medicine issues, case studies and current trends of injuries and illnesses in the conference are among topics discussed.

Chargers sign Vinnedge, Betschart

No Wyoming football players were drafted over the weekend in the NFL Draft, but a pair of former Cowboys will try to stick with the San Diego Chargers. Punter Billy Vinnedge and tight end/H-back Wade Betschart both signed free agent contracts Sunday with the Chargers. As of Sunday night, they were the lone former Cowboys to sign with a NFL team. Cornerbacks Michael Medina and Julius Stinson are waiting for that opportunity. Vinnedge and Betschart join former Cowboys, wide receiver Malcom Floyd and quarterback Casey Bramlet, on the San Diego roster. Bramlet was picked up last week, likely as a "camp arm." Other former Cowboys currently on NFL rosters include kicker Aaron Elling (Cincinnati), cornerback Derrick Martin (Baltimore), offensive lineman Adam Goldberg (St. Louis), linebacker Patrick Chukwurah (Tampa Bay) and safety John Wendling and defensive lineman Corey Mace (both of Buffalo).

Do fired NFL coaches still get paid?

The first Monday after the end of the regular season in the NFL is accurately labeled Black Monday. Less than a week after Christmas, it's when the axes fall on several head coaches. Bah humbug!!! As of this writing, three NFL coaches -- Eric Mangini of the New York Jets, Romeo Crennel of the Cleveland Browns and Rod Marinelli of the Detroit Lions -- will be filing their unemployment papers any day now. Actually, that makes me wonder. Do fired professional coaches file for unemployment compensation? Are they actually listed on the national unemployment statistics? I wonder what the fired coaches bi-weekly unemployment checks will be? I'll bet it is more than $330 a week. I blame it on the economy. Forget the fact that the Lions went 0-16 this season.
