Wednesday practice notes

The Wyoming coaching staff decided to add a little hitting this spring. On Wednesday, the hit of the spring camp might of come when redshirt freshman strong safety Brian Kuhtz met sophomore running back Darius Terry head on … as in head on like a Mack truck.

“Those were two young dudes were getting busy there, a couple of young bulls” Wyoming coach Joe Glenn said with a smile.

Kuhtz is a solid young specimen, at 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds. Glenn said he gave the special teams problems last year as a redshirt. He should do the same on the field this season.

“I think he’ll come in handy on special teams, covering kicks. He just needs some experience,” Glenn said. “He’s a big guy who can run and he is an all-around athlete. I know he has a future here.”

That hit certainly got the Cowboys going. There’s been no lack of excitement in the now five completed spring practices.

“Bob Cole is the difference,” Glenn said. “His personality, his persona, his relationship. he has made my job a lot easier. The kids are working hard. He believes in the kids and he makes them play harder. Would you rather play for a coach who pats you on the butt or kicks you in the ass? What would you respond to the best?”

On Monday, the Wyoming defense probably had the better of the Cowboy offense. Defenses are usually a little ahead of the offense early on and this spring has been no exception.

On Wednesday, the offense had a better day, although it wasn’t from a bad day on defense. That’s just the way it goes, Glenn said.

“Going against your own team, it is almost every other play any more,” Glenn said. “The defense gets a great play, then on the next play the offense gets pumped up. I can’t say that anybody is getting the best of anybody. I know it is spirited. When we let them hit in the last eight pays, which I have never done before, they are flat getting after it on both ends.”

One improvement on offense, Glenn said, is coming from the No. 2 squad. He said graduate assistant Jovon Bouknight has them making some big plays.

“Bob calls them the Patriots because Jovon is down there stealing film,” Glenn said with a laugh.

If there is improvement this fall, Glenn said it will be determined by their veteran players.

“I know we have athletes. Finally, we have 18 seniors and 21 juniors,” he said. “Last year, Air Force have 31 seniors. The birthdays are coming, we’re a more veteran team that we have had since I have been here.. Yet, I know our schedule is tough and our league is good. We’ll go one day at a time. We’re 149 days away from playing Ohio. We’ll see how that goes.”
