Cowboy golfers improve at MWC, but can't move up
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Another day of improved scores for the Wyoming Cowboy golf team on Saturday at the 2008 Mountain West Conference Men’s Golf Championship produced another frustrating day of non-movement in the team standings.
Wyoming fired a third and final round score of 294 (+10), their best of the championship, yet still finished in eighth place of nine MWC squads. UW’s three-round total was 888 (+36), after adding their first two rounds of 299 (+15) and 295 (+11) to Saturday’s tally.
The Cowboys were one of only two schools to improve their team scores with each round, eventual league champion Colorado State being the other.
“We are just one or two shots a player behind the top schools in our conference,” said UW head coach Joe Jensen. “My guys fought their brains out and were competitive. We are close, just not there yet. There is some comfort in the fact that we were the lowest ranked team coming into the event and did not finish in that spot. As has been my approach all year, this is great experience for a young team and it will give us a chance to be good in the future.”
UW freshman Gabe Maier led his team and finished in the top-20 in the field of 45 golfers, tying for 18th place with a 54-hole total of 218 (+5). He led the entire field over the course of the event in Par 5 scoring at eight-under par. Maier shot 72 (+1) on Saturday with three birdies in his round, totaling ten for the tournament.

His round contrasted three birdies and 13 pars against only two bogeys. Johnson shot 72 (+1) on Friday after opening the event with an 82 (+11) on Thursday.
Wyoming also counted scores of 75 (+4) and 77 (+6) from freshmen Zach Zaremba and Mike May towards their final round team score. UW’s Phil Henzlik ended his first collegiate season with a round of 78 (+7).
Colorado State captured its first MWC Men’s Golf Championship with a four-stroke win over TCU. The Rams entered the final round in fourth place and eight strokes back of team leaders BYU and TCU, who were tied at four-under par. CSU fired the day’s best round of six-under par 278 to claim the title with a 54-hole total of two-under par 850.
TCU posted its highest finish at the MWC Golf Championship after placing second with a team score of 854 (+2). Last year’s league champion BYU placed third with a total of 857 (+5). No. 16 UNLV was fourth at 859, followed by Utah (866), New Mexico (868), No. 25 San Diego State (871), Wyoming (888) and Air Force (890).
UNLV sophomore Eddie Olson maintained his one-stroke lead after the second round, firing a one-under par 70 today, to claim the individual title with a 54-hole total of 209 (-4). Olson won the crown by three strokes over BYU’s Robbie Fillmore, CSU’s Riley Arp and SDSU’s Aaron Goldberg, whom all tied for second place with identical scores of 212 (-1).
