LHS winter sports under way
I think we should move indoors now for the Laramie High School winter sports teams -- of course, unless you are the ski teams.
The winter season begins on Thursday for the LHS boys and girls' basketball teams at the McDonald's Classic in Cheyenne. Also on Thursday, the Laramie wrestling team opens by hosting Poudre High School of Fort Collins.
For the Plainsmen basketball team, this weekend will be an opportunity for Jason Mountain's team to mix it up with the rest of the state and see where they stack. Laramie, which has reached the state tournament in Mountain's first two years, will look to get off to a more consistent start this season.
The Plainsmen face Kelly Walsh at 1:15 p.m. on Thursday and will then take on Star Valley at 6:30 p.m. On Friday, Laramie will take on Rock Springs at 8:15 p.m., before closing the tournament on Saturday against Evanston at 12:15 p.m.
The Lady Plainsmen will also have the same "get their feet wet"attitude, especially with the fact that they are being guided by first-year head coach Rod Tyson. 'This is not Tyson's first venture into coaching at LHS, as the former Plainsmen and Wyoming Cowboy was also the boys' head coach in the mid 1990s. Tyson has been active in coaching girls youth basketball throughout the years and is familiar with most of the current Lady Plainsmen.
The Lady Plainsmen open Thursday at 1:15 p.m. against Kelly Walsh, before taking on Rock Springs at 8:15 p.m. On Friday, Laramie takes on Casper Natrona at 6:30 p.m., before closing with Star Valley Saturday at 10:45 a.m.
The Plainsmen wrestling team will look to contend once again under head coach Brad Edmunds. Laramie, which hasn't had too many home duals in the past few seasons, will be at home right off the bat against Poudre Valley, beginning at 5 p.m.
The Laramie Nordic ski team was set to begin the season this weekend in Casper, but will have to wait with the lack of snow. Also on tap this winter will be alpine, boys swimming and indoor track.
Look for a weekly LHS feature on Laramie High sports, beginning Thursday with a look at Mountain and his Plainsmen. Throughout the season, Wyoming Sports.org will feature one of the programs, as well as some game coverage.'
Go Plainsmen and Lady Plainsmen!!!
