Just what/who is/are the 14ers

Got my first 14ers press release today. I opened the file just to see what it was. I knew it wasn't a virus-infected file because it was forwarded by UW media relations.

I guess I have been out of the loop. I didn't know what it was. Well, as it turns out, the 14ers are a Denver-area NBA Developmental League team. I guess I did hear at one time that Denver was getting a Development League team.

As it turns out, Wyoming's own Josh Davis is part of the roster, hence the e-mail.

So here's the press release for all of you 14ers fans.

The Colorado 14ers basketball club announced on Wednesday that seven players that will be invited to training camp beginning Saturday, Nov. 15. Returning players Damien Lolar and Eric Osmundson will be joined on the training camp roster by Davis, Jamar Brown, Joe Dabbert, Lamar Butler, and Keith Salscheider.

This will be the first training camp for new 14ers head coach Bob MacKinnon. “I’m happy to start my first season with the 14ers with players of this quality,” said MacKinnon. “I believe that we have a great mix and we’re set up to be successful when the season starts. This player base combined with our draft will enable us to put an exciting team on the court for our fans.”

Lolar and Osmundson return after helping anchor the 14ers backcourt defense a year ago. Davis joins Colorado after spending training camp with the NBA’s Indiana Pacers. The former Wyoming Cowboy is one of three local allocation players on the 14ers roster. played collegiately at CSU–Pueblo, and former Creighton star Dabbert hails from Platte Canyon High School in Fort Collins.

The final two players earned their training camp invites through the 14ers local player tryouts. Butler was a standout player at George Mason who helped lead the Patriots to the 2006 NCAA Final Four, and Salscheider is a veteran sharp-shooter who will be entering his first D-League training camp.

The remainder of the 14ers training camp roster will be acquired through the 2008 NBA Development League Draft, taking place at 5 p.m. tonight. Head Coach Bob MacKinnon and staff will make their selections at the 14ers draft party, live from LoDo’s Bar & Grill at 104th and Federal in Westminster.

The NBA Development League is the NBA's official minor league, and the first-ever basketball league with direct affiliations to NBA teams. Having recently completed its seventh season, the NBA D-League’s goals are to provide affordable, NBA-caliber entertainment to fans of its 16 teams, as well as continue to develop players, coaches, referees and front-office personnel for the NBA. As the single source for in-season player "call-ups" to the NBA, fans of the D-League enjoy the highest caliber of basketball played outside the NBA. In fact 15 percent of players on 2008 end-of-season NBA rosters spent time honing their skills in the League. In addition, it has produced current NBA coaches and 25 percent of the NBA’s referees. The NBA D-League is an innovative and rapidly growing sports property that also serves as an experimental testing ground for new initiatives like NBA Futurecast, the live web-streaming of all games available free at nba.com/futurecast. The League also provides continuing education and professional development resources for its players, and is committed to serving its local communities through D-LEAGUE CARES and grassroots efforts.

Located on the south side of U.S. Highway 36, between 112th and 120th Streets, the Broomfield Event Center is a state of the art 180,000 square foot multi-purpose event center with 6,000 seats, including 25 suites, 900 club seats, a sit-down restaurant, two themed bars and a separate basketball practice facility. The Broomfield Event Center is set to host concerts, trade shows, rodeos and sporting events. It is the home of the Rocky Mountain Rage Professional Hockey Club (Central Hockey League) and the Colorado 14ers Professional Basketball Club (NBA Development League, Denver Nuggets, New Jersey Nets, Toronto Raptors affiliate team).

Well, that explains it. Except I still don't know what a 14ers is.
