Rangers-Post 6 a no go again

There's no doubt that the Laramie area needed rain. My lawn desperately needed some non-watering moisture.

But one thing that does not bode well with rain is baseball.

The Laramie Rangers AA American Legion baseball team is finding out the hard way. The Rangers were to play Cheyenne Post 6 Wednesday night in a single 9-inning game at Cowboy Field. A heavy rainstorm earlier in the afternoon took care of that.

Despite the gallant efforts of the Laramie coaches and volunteers -- they had hoped to get the game in Thursday at 11 a.m. Once again, no dice. Although it hadn't rained since Wednesday, the fields were just in too bad of shape to play ... not only for the good of the fields, but for the good of the players' health.

There are some bummed-out people about the most recent cancellation, including Rangers' manager Sean McKinney, his coaching staff and his players; KOWB broadcaster David Settle and yours truly.

We all wanted to see that game. Why you ask? The seven-time defending state champion Post 6 is 3-0 against Laramie, outscoring the Rangers 50-17. The thing is, the Rangers are much improved from the last time the two teams met on May 21. And I'm sure Post 6 is as well.

With pitching ace Coley Wilson on the mound for the Rangers, this could have been the day that the two longtime rivals played a meaningful game.

We might not know until the state tournament, if the two teams tangle there in Gillette. Post 6 has to play this weekend in its conference mini-tourney and Laramie will do the same next week in its version of conference play in Rock Springs. There's a good chance that the two managers won't be able to get another remake in.

If that's the case, the Rangers will be a little rusty going into the conference tournament, as they haven't played since July 17 in the sweep of Green River. There's a possible makeup with Rawlins on Sunday, but its not likely the A Generals will want to play the AA Rangers anyway. Last week the Rangers A team 10-runned the Generals in the Kleppinger Klassic at Cowboy Field.

I guess that anything is possible: Maybe McKinney and Post 6 manager Tagg Lain can come up with a day to play, but it is going to be tough.

At least one thing is for certain: My lawn is looking better these days. Now I just have to mow it again.
