Michel is simply the best

Laramie High School's Stephen Michel left no doubt this past weekend at the Wyoming State Track and Field Championships in Casper.

He is the top male athlete in Wyoming track and field history.

Michel won four state titles on Friday and Saturday and set state records (all-classifications) in three of them. There have been some great track and field athletes throughout the years in Wyoming, but no one can top Michel's feats.

On Friday, Michel had a personal best in winning the long jump (23-feet, 8 inches). That was the only record he didn't shatter. On Saturday, he set new Wyoming records in winning the 100-meter dash (10.65 seconds), 200 meters (21.36) and triple jump (48-9 1/2). Michel turned in a record 10.50 in the 100 prelims.

On Saturday, Michel ended his Plainsmen career with 12 indoor and outdoor championships. He'll now turn his attention to the University of Wyoming after signing a letter-of-intent earlier this spring. If you compare his times and distances last weekend to the MWC Championships, Michel would have scored 22 points for the Cowboys.

Laramie fans will get a chance to see much more of one of their favorite sons, especially with the MWC Championships at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex next spring.
