LHS boys, girls win state openers

It proved to be a good first day for the home teams. Both Laramie High School soccer teams opened the Wyoming State Championships in Laramie with shutout victories.

It didn't take long for the No. 1 Laramie Lady Plainsmen to get going in the first round, as they blasted Rock Springs 6-0. Laramie scored all six goals in the first half. The top-ranked Plainsmen, meanwhile, had another outstanding defensive effort, blanking Green River, 2-0.

The win sets up a semifinal matchup for the Lady Plainsmen (14-1-0) against Casper Natrona on Friday. Natrona edged Gillette 2-1. The other semifinal contest will pit Cheyenne Central vs. Cheyenne East. Central routed Star Valley 7-0, while East edged Kelly Walsh 2-1.

Both semifinal games will begin at 11:30 a.m. on Friday. Laramie plays Natrona on the UW field #2, with the East-Central matchup on UW Field #1.

In the loser-out games on Friday, Kelly Walsh faces Star Valley at 9 a.m. on UW Field #1 and Rock Springs plays Gillette at 9 a.m. on UW Field #2.

The Plainsmen (13-1-2), face Cheyenne Central in today's semifinals (4:30 p.m., UW Field #2). Central opened the tournament with a 7-1 rout of Rock Springs. In the other boys' quarterfinal games, Kelly Walsh shut out Gillette 2-0 and Cheyenne East did the same to Casper Natrona, 3-0. Kelly Walsh and East will meet in the other semifinal, which also begins at 4:30 p.m. on UW Field #1.

In the two loser-out games, Gillette will play Natrona at 2 p.m. (UW Field #1) and Rock Springs takes on Green River at 2 p.m. on UW Field #2.

In the boys 3A tournament, Cody (10-0 over Newcastle), Worland (2-1 over Lander), Jackson (6-0 over Torrington) and Buffalo (4-1 over Powell) all came away with quarterfinal wins. Cody faces Worland at 4:30 p.m. (LSA Field) and Jackson takes on Buffalo (4:30 p.m., UW Fieldhouse Field) in the semis. In the consolation bracket, Newcastle takes on Lander at 2 p.m. (LSA Field) and Torrington plays Powell at 2 p.m. (UW Fieldhouse Field).

In the 3A girls' tournament, quarterfinals winners were Jackson (9-0 over Torrington), Cody (1-0 over Lander), Worland (1-0 over Newcastle) and Buffalo (5-0 over Powell). In today's semifinals, Jackson takes on Cody at 11:30 a.m. (LSA Field) and Worland faces Buffalo (11:30 a.m. (UW Fieldhouse Field).

In the consolation bracket, Torrington and Lander tangle at 9 a.m. (LSA Field) and Newcastle faces Powell at 9 a.m. (UW Fieldhouse Field).
